About D’s Home Food

Hi, I’m D.

I think of my cooking alter ego as “Mama Dee” but that name is already taken by a fantastic lady, named ”Mama D”, who sadly died in Spring 2009.  She was amazing;  at a later date I plan to write about her. So for now I’m just plain “D”.

I started D’s Home Food to record my experiences as I participated in United Way of King County’s Hunger Challenge 2010. The goal of the five day challenge was to live on the amount Food Stamps allots your family.  For us that meant $12 a day or $60 total for two adults.  Hard work and excellent learning.

Although I’ve had some interesting adventures with other cooking styles, I keep returning to Home Food.  Sometimes my return has been because of  financial necessity and sometimes just because.

Home Food is a little bit different for each person. For me it means a certain kind of comfort food that is simple, fresh, easy to prepare, thrifty, makes good use of ingredients and is satisfying eating.  I come from a Canadian/American Home Food tradition. Every culture and probably every household  has its own version of Home Food.  As a foodie I’m interested in all of it.

Home Food means meals that are enjoyable, simple to prepare, fresh and thrifty.             These are the universal goals of the peasant family food of most cultures.   Sharing food unites us.

I really enjoyed reading your posts on the Hunger Challenge. I followed up on most of the blogs listed as participating and your experience was the most interesting and the one closest to which I could imagine following. I hope you keep blogging. I’d love to see some of your other recipes. The peanut butter cookies looked great!

Hi Nancy, thank you for taking the time to comment. I’m so glad you enjoyed my Hunger Challenge 2010 posts. Having previously been on Food Stamps and being unemployed now, I know how difficult it can be to put meals on the family table for minimum $$. I tried for an authentic experience with the Challenge. Lots of people are in the same situation now. There is a lot we can learn from each other. Think I will continue blogging, after a short breather. Thank you for the encouragement. Regards, D
